Make a Transformative Impact

As part of their studies, Gap Year students give back to the communities around them.
One Gap Year student, Simone Henry, wanted to have a positive impact, so she put her ideas into action by kick-starting a community library project in the informal settlement of Zandspruit, a collection of shacks housing over 75,000 people on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The team she led established a true passion for reading and learning amongst the children of Zandspruit by improving the run-down library. Simone’s team catalogued the 900 existing books, trained a group of volunteer librarians, and redecorated to make the library an inviting space. Through speaking engagements in New York, Simone collected more than 2,500 books donated by American children eager to share their fervor for reading with South Africa’s youth.
This project is not only going strong, it was recently visited by Michelle Obama.
