Letter from the Founders
Dear prospective gap year student,
When we established African Leadership Academy, we sought to create a powerful global
institution on the African continent: a place where young leaders from a wide variety of
backgrounds would come together and develop solutions to the most critical challenges facing Africa
and the world.
The gap year program at ALA gives highly motivated, outstanding high school graduates from
Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas a unique opportunity to join peers from across the
African continent on our beautiful campus in South Africa. At ALA, you will explore the unique
challenges facing the African continent and the tremendous opportunities to have impact here. You
will design and implement your own service project, giving you a chance to lead and have a positive
impact on a community in need. Finally, you will form lifelong bonds with and learn from other
outstanding young leaders from around the world.
The ALA gap year is a powerful, life-changing experience. As you consider your path after
high school, we encourage you think carefully about your goals and interests and to learn more
about the program. If you believe 10 months at ALA is right for you, we encourage you to
apply.
We believe the African continent is the most exciting place in the world today. And we
believe there is no better place to discover the diversity, wonder, and potential of this continent
than African Leadership Academy.
Welcome.
Fred Swaniker, Chris Bradford, Peter Mombaur, and Acha Leke
