Applications Rolling in from Amazing Young African Leaders

African Leadership Academy has already received over
1,600 applications from outstanding young leaders in 34 countries across the African
continent - enough to fill our inaugural class many times over!
Our applicant pool to date is 51% female and 49% male, and includes top students from North,
East, West, and Southern Africa. Our applicant pool includes top performers on national
examinations, winners of national and international math, science, and civics competitions, and
young entrepreneurs who have started businesses in agriculture, computer programming, and jewelry
design. Many have achieved despite incredible hardship: some are orphans who have served as the
sole breadwinner for their families, while others have taught themselves due to high rates of
teacher absenteeism. Our applicants consistently remind us of the incredible power of youth to
effect dramatic positive change.
One applicant, William Kamkwamba of Malawi, was recently the subject of a short documentary film
